Salutations!
If you read my last post, then, you know I went home a couple weeks ago. Often times The Mom and I like to cook stuff when we're together and this time was no exception. Instead of the normal eats, we decided to branch out and tackle Fried Green Tomatoes! I must tell you that whenever I think of the food, I immediately think of the movie! It's one of those things you watch when you're alone at home with a lot of time on your hands.
I've had them one other time than this and I thought they were rather tasty, so I gave the thumbs up to the challenge! I will admit now that I really didn't have too much hands on action with this. I was too busy snapping the pictures and being excited. :)
We pulled out all of the ingredients first to get them ready:
*Flour ~ Cornmeal ~ Baking Powder ~ Salt ~ Cayenne ~ Milk ~ Eggs ~ Tomatoes ~ Butter *
Then it was time to get elbow deep in some Southern cookin! The tomatoes were expertly cut by my mother into nice thick slices and then given a frothy milk and egg bath. Next it's a dunk in the cornmeal and seasonings and finally a rest on the pan to before being thrown in the cast iron skillet..

They fry up quick as a flash and are crunchy on the outside and firm and hot on the inside! Some got a little darker than expected, but even they still had a good flavor.
I would totally make these on my own. It reminds me of frying up some pork chops except it takes a lot less time. Have you made fried green tomatoes before? How did it go?
Until the next time..
Ciao!
I really like that movie!! The recipe looks easy enough. I don't think I've had fried green or red tomatoes. I'll have to try it one day.
ReplyDeleteI know, right? I believe you can only fried the green ones, because the red wouldn't be firm enough. It is very easy. You should go ahead and try it! :)
DeleteHi A. :)
ReplyDeleteSo glad you got to spend time with your family :)
I've never eaten "Fried Green Tomatoes" but the movie is just one of the all time classics for me :)
So, happy you got over your allergies, my Hubby suffers from them and had an really bad time of it a few weeks back, no fun at all :(
Hope you have a lovely weekend, cheers, T. :)
Hey T :)
DeleteThanks!
I agree! It's totally a classic. Half the time when I'm watching it, I forget that she's telling a story. ha ha!
Omgoodness, yes! Allergies are no joke. Hope your Hubby won't have anymore problems.
Since the wknd is over, have a great week!!
YUMMM!!! I love fried green tomatoes. I very seldom cook them because hubby doesn't care for them.
ReplyDeleteHi there! Yeah, it's always a bother cooking for yourself. You always have too much leftover and who wants to eat something for days on end? :op I'll have to try doing them again myself real soon.
DeleteI did not really know one could eat green tomatoes, and I have never seen them in a shop either. But it looks really great!!
ReplyDeleteHaha! Yes, people seem to enjoy them quite a bit here. I don't really recall seeing green tomatoes in the grocery stores where I live, but maybe I just wasn't looking for them?? I don't know if anyone eats them without frying them first, because then you're just eating an unripe tomato... :)
DeleteI'm in my thirties, I've lived in the south all my life, and I've never had a single fried green tomato. I should probably have my Southerner card revoked.
ReplyDeletelol! I wouldn't feel to bad about it.. I've lived in the South for most of my life, but I still say 'pop' instead of 'soda' and I like Pepsi way better than Coke... That's pretty much unheard of in Atlanta, the Coke capital! :op
DeleteI think I will have to save this post for when I start my garden next year! They look so tasty!
ReplyDeletePlease do! Let me know how everything goes.. :o)
DeleteOne of my favorite movies, oh yeah! I often wondered what they taste like. I might just try it.
