Hey Hey Friends!
I've been seriously slacking on the food adventures lately! Well it's time to break the silence and tell you about the goodness of The Varsity! Some Friday night a couple week ago, I got it in my head that I was tired of the same old restaurants and I wanted to go somewhere I hadn't been before. Like some f-o-o-l-s, The Boo & I went to the Howell Mill area here in Atlanta because I wanted to try Chow Baby.
If you've lived in Atlanta for any length of time, then you know that Friday night + Howell Mill area = lunacy. I really like the Howell Mill area, but it's so not meant for people who actually drive cars.. What do I mean by this? If you don't live in the area and can't just walk to the venue of your choice, then you're rather screwed! So, when we got to Chow Baby it was a 30 min wait. It wasn't a problem at first, but standing out in the chilly high wind with smokers sharing their habit, was a bit much. So we decided to bounce and head downtown to The Varsity!
I've lived in Atlanta for 6 years now and had never once gone to this landmark... (the shock & horror!) I always wanted to try it, but just never had the opportunity to do so. I'm really glad I did though! Many a night I have traveled up and down I-75 and seen the bright lights of The Varsity, but I never expected it to be as big and grand as it was!
Not only did they have this drive thru area (kinda like Sonic), but there also were a ton of entrances to get in and out of the building to sit in one of many seats. It's was like everywhere I looked there was another little alcove of seats ready to be filled.
When you walk up to the counter the cashiers yell, 'WHAT'LL YA HAVE? WHAT'LL YA HAVE?' And as is usual for The Boo and I, we both got the same meal which consisted of hot dogs with mustard & cheese, with a side of fries! It may not look like much here, but trust and believe that it was good.... I've heard some people say that the food was too greasy for them, but that wasn't my experience. If I had gotten a hamburger, that may be a different story. I'm a sucker for hot dogs though, so a burger will have to wait until the next time. :)
I loved how they had their history and celeb pix splayed up on the walls, along with a list of their own Varsity Lingo. Oh! and you can't forget the ice cream counter either... It was a great overall experience and I'm looking forward to going back again. There are a lot of restaurants in Atlanta that try to give you 'fancy' comfort foods.... Sometimes you just want comfort-comfort foods and this totally hit the spot!
Have you been to The Varsity before? Did you have a fun Food Adventure as of late?
Ciao!
Sounds pretty good! I love a good Ice Cream Bar as well :)
ReplyDeleteIce Cream...One of my favorite things in the entire world.
ReplyDeleteI've never been to Atlanta, but I do know what it's like to live some place for years and not visit some pretty big landmarks! Glad you got the chance to try this place out. =0)
